This is how BrisLETS works!
BrisLETS (Brisbane Local Energy Trading System) is a community-driven initiative that enables members to exchange goods and services without using traditional money. Instead, participants trade using “Units,” a complementary currency designed to foster local economic resilience and social connection.,
🌱 What Is BrisLETS?
BrisLETS is a mutual credit system where members earn Units by offering goods or services and spend them on offerings from other members. This system operates through the Australian Community Exchange Server (CES), allowing participants to track their transactions online. Each Unit is roughly equivalent in value to one Australian dollar, providing a familiar reference for pricing.
Unlike traditional barter, BrisLETS doesn’t require direct exchanges between two parties. For example, you might earn Units by providing gardening services to one member and spend them on computer repairs from another. This flexibility encourages a diverse and dynamic trading environment.()
🤝 Building Community Through Trade
Since its inception in 1998, BrisLETS has been more than just an alternative economic system; it’s a platform for building community. Members come from various backgrounds and offer a wide array of services and goods, including:
- Services: Childcare, tutoring, home maintenance, pet sitting, massage therapy, and more.
- Goods: Homegrown produce, handmade crafts, second-hand items, and baked goods.
Regular Trading Days are held at different locations around Brisbane, providing opportunities for members to meet, exchange, and strengthen community ties. These events often include shared meals and workshops, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.(Brislets)

- Skill Sharing: Members can both offer and learn new skills, promoting personal growth and community development.
